married after banns, Jun Q, 1853, Newcastle T., 10b 78. Occupation
engraver in 1860 according to son's birth record; Death 1862 Mar Q. 10b 3,
James Spens is listed as informant living at 61 East Elswick Lane;
Cuthbert was the 2md husband for Sarah Ann.
He was listed as a widower of full age - joiner - residence Red Barns
witnesses were James Spens and John Weldon - chapel of St Anne
Death certificate gives address of death as 61 East Elswick, Westgate,Newcastle
died at age 40 Joiner - JAMES SPENS present at death


Sarah Ann Spens

Birth info came from Christenings of Gateshead parish 1663-1875 L-Z F#0472213 age 22 in 1851 cen of All Saints Parish of Newcastle born Gateshead, Durham Death Index 1909 Mar Quarter, Newcastle T. 10b, 70. Sarah married Thomas Matthews (1848 June Q, Newcastle T. XXV 457). Sarah Ann Matthews married Cuthbert Douse 1853 Jun Quarter, Newcastle T., 10b 78. Sarah Douse, widow, married John Stonehouse 1867, Sep Q, Newcastle T. 10b 121. Sarah apparently had returned to live with her family following Thomas Matthew's death and thus was in the census with them in 1851 with no children.

Sarah's dau Isabella wrote that "Mother had ten of a family. I am the only one left (dec 1939)." Sarah and brother Thomas and family lived in York, according to Isabella.

In IGI as James Spence Douse Batch and sheet C016103 847924, printout 1238679. This child was not known to Harry Spens in America; however James is listed as 17, son of Sarah Stonehouse in 1871 Census of Newcastle, St. John's Parish.

and SP 19 Apr 1979 all in Provo Temple, Certificate of Death, State of Utah,
buried in Plat K Block 2 Lot 11 N 1/2, cause of death: hemorrhage, (after a
tooth was pulled) no stone on grave;

Obituary Scrapbook Elizabeth Spens Chesnut Elizabeth Spens Chesnut, 67, widow of Robert Chesnut, died at the family residence, 653 Park street, Tuesday at 8:20 a.m. of obstruction of the bowels.

Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Scrapbook, 1933:
Surviving are the following sons and daughters: Robert N., Nathaniel Edward and Eva Chesnut of Salt Lake; Mrs. Erving Richins of Pleasant Grove; Mrs. Ervan Lamb of Minneapolis, Minn., and Clyde Chesnut of American Fork. Seven brothers and sisters. Mrs. Annie Rasmussen, Nathaniel and Thomas Spens of Burlington, Wyo.; Mrs. Thomas Burn-side, Mrs. Sarah Wilcox and Mrs. Clara Brown of Mt. Pleasant and Mrs. Bertha Mills of Alberta, Canada also survive. Funeral services will be conducted in the Eighth ward chapel Friday at 11 a.m., after which the body will be taken to American Fork, where additional services will be conducted in the First ward chapel. Burial will take place in the American Fork City cemetery.
