(illegible). Listed as being of Argyle Street at time of death.

info from St Cuthbert's parish for birth and christening, birth given as 30
Nov on record, but was copied from James Spens's pocketbook by two descendents
as 30 October. Death date indicated by naming of next son James in 1833;


Gilcherst Bertha Spens

Birth index: Gilcherst was born 14 May 1822 and baptized 17 May 1822 in St.
Cuthbert's parish, Edinburgh; Bertha Spence was a female servant in the Abercromby family in the 1841 Census ED 158, age 19. The Death index 1853 June Quarter 10b, 47 at Temperance Row, for Bertha Spens, age 31, which could place her birth in 1822. This child is listed as Gilchrist, not Bertha,in a notebook kept by her father, James Spens. There is no Bertha Spence/Spens in the OPR; The cemetery record states "Bartha" was of Temperance Row, Shieldfield, age 31, daughter of Mr. James Spens, Newcastle Weekly Chronicle, May 27, 1853 Friday, buried in unconcertrated ground, Ward 11, Section 2E, Grave 3, Jesmond General Cemetery, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England. (Bartha, exactly how an Edinburgh Scot would pronounce Bertha). It appears that Gilcherst was later called Bertha. Info from St Cuthberts parish for birth and christening. Her endowment as Bertha was completed March 16, 1996 in the Provo Temple.


Mitchel Spens

Mitchel is listed in a notebook kept by his father, James Spens and also named as a child in a letter from Isabella Brumwell, dau of Sarah Ann, a sister to Mitchel. He is listed in the temple baptisms as born 20 May, 1824 Edinburgh and death as 11 Jun 1843 Edinburgh.


Robert Spens

Birth/Christenings of St Mary's Gateshead parish 1663-1875 L-Z F#0472213;
Robert is not named as an uncle in letter from Isabella Brumwell, but he is
listed in his father's pocket book; James named his last son Robert, born to his second wife, indicating that this son had died at least by 1856;


James Spens

James is listed in his father's pocket book, born 2 Feb 1833 Edinburgh,
Not shown in OPR records of Midlothian. Burial for James Spens found in
St. Mary's church, Gateshead Parish aged 2 weeks (Fm 252789).


Isabella Spens

OPR info from St Cuthbert's Parish register, not in the 1851 Census with her
family. Not listed by Isabella Brumwell as a sister of Nathaniel; listed in
James's pocket book; Some give 12 Jun 1857 as death date??


Mary Spens

Mary in not listed in Isabella's letter, but is in her father's notebook;
She is not with the family in 1851 Census, and not in Midlothian OPR records. I have found no other record of Mary.

James Spens Lieutenant Colonel

Lt. Col in British Army, served in India; 24 Jun 1886, confirmation of James Spens who died 17 Aug 1840, granted at Edinburgh to Jessie Hannah Elizabeth Spens or Dunning, grand-daughter of deceased, Executrix dative qua next of kin; previous inventory recorded 4 February 1842;
At the time Frances died, James was 27 years old in the 73rd Regt. An infant dau also died at the same time.

Translator for Watkins/Shobert, Watt;
James (1797-1870) recorded Thomas Spens, Doctor, as his father when he married Jane Gray. It is thought that this James's inheritance was usurped by James's half brother, Nathaniel Spens writer to the Signant, whose posterity subsequently became extinct.

George was the son of James Tinline and Jane Lough
James was the son of George Tineline and Margaret Nicholl
George Tinline from Ancrum, Roxburghshire, Scotland married Margaret Nicholl who was his second wife. He was stated as having twins Robert and Elizabeth. Research by William Nixon Tinline.

George Tinline is reported as having an illegitimate child by Jean Crawford. She was born on 26 Dec 1808, and baptised on 30 April 1811 in Melrose, Scotland. Baptised Jean Tinline/Crawford 27 April 1819(IGI)
He also had a son to Janet Gibson but she took him to America after her remarriage when George died in 1812.

(There is no Spens death indexed in England or Scotland for Isabella Spens in 1866 and she is not burried there, only mentioned); Thomas and family lived in York according to Isabella Stonehouse Brumwell, his niece, but were burried in Newcastle upon Tyne;

Clara Spens

According to their marriage license (from Film in Manti Family History Center),Osmond Olsen, an Elder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints married Clara and "Roy" on November 7, 1912. Clara's name is spelled Spence--the clerk's liberty, witnesses were W.L. Hall and Sarah Staker Olsen, both Clara and Thomas were 21 years of age, filed on 16 Nov 1912; baptism listed on TIB card as 2 July 1902; Bertha's Bible gives May 3rd, 1891 as birth date;

Clara had a baby placed for adoption, born 3 Oct 1930 in Ogden, Utah at the McKay Dee Hospital: The child's adopted name was Kathleen Warner. Kathleen married Lee Arvil Wankier 23 Nov 1949 in the Salt Lake Temple. Lee was born 24 Jun 1926 in Levan, UT and died Jun 17, 2004 in Delta, UT, buried June 21st. Lee and Kathleen had six children, Nan (and Clyde) Bunker, Delta; Kristine (and Paul) Swenson, South Jordan; David (and Angela) Wankier, Delta; W. Gordon (and Renee, Blackfoot, Idaho; Bart (and Kandi), Delta, and Norma, (preceded parents in death). Lee is buried in Levan, UT.


Vernon Brown

Records and information from Ila Jensen; died after three weeks in LDS Hospital in SLC, Ila stayed with Aunt Mary Jane. Tombstone at Mt Pleasant cemetery reads: Vernon Brown 1917-1926
